How do I add an RSS feed to my portal page?

by Your Librarian

It’s real easy to add an RSS feed to your personal ASB portal page.  Just follow these directions:

1.  Click on “Add an element.”

2.  You’ll be prompted to “select an element type.”

3.  Choose the “rss” option.

4.  A pop-up window will appear.

5.  Post the url address for the feed in the space given.  (The address usually ends with a /feed)

(Paste this for the Dear Librarian: http://dearlibrarian.edublogs.org/feed/ and this for the Book of the Week: http://bookoftheweek.edublogs.org/feed/)

6.  Once you’ve pasted the url, click on “add the element,” and the feed will be added!

This way you would automatically know when new posts have been added to your favorite blogs–like the Dear Librarian and Book of the Week!

How do I use the online catalog?

by Your Librarian

The features of the new online catalog are very simple.  You can search by title, author, keyword, subject, or even series.  If you want to use the Boolean search terms, you can conduct a more effective search by clicking on “Power Search.”  This will let you add the terms “and,” “or,” and “not.”  Another handy feature you can search for is by “Award Winners.”  This might come in handy if you want to read the new o any old Caldecot, Printz, or Newberry winners.  When in doubt on using the new online catalog, ask your librarian!

How do I get to the new online catalog?

by Your Librarian

Currently there are two ways you can access the new online catalog for the ASB Library.  First, you can go to your Internet favorites, and look for the link to “ASB Library Catalog.”  Or, the second option is from the main ASB web page (www.asbindia.org), go to the “Quicklinks” in the upper right hand corner and click on the last option: “ASB Library Catalog.”

What’s so great about having an online catalog is being able to access it anywhere!  Here’s a scenario for you: you’re vacationing in the United States for winter break, and you have a research topic you’re studying.  Well, before purchasing any books, you could check the online catalog to see if we already have books on the topic you’re thinking of buying.

What should I read this summer?

by Your Librarian

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy leisurely reading–you have time, you’re on vacation, and you get to relax!  This summer you could choose among the list below for reading.  Or you could open up a Shelfari account to see what others are reading.  Become Eddie Reads’ friend–our library eagle, Ann Krembs’ friend, or Gizelle Rodriques’.  Once you all start joining you can make a network of your friends.  You can even add the Shelfari application to your Facebook profile!

Here are two lists of the most popular, most recommended books read this year by ASB middle and high school students:

How do I add a feed for the “Dear Librarian?”

by Your Librarian

Well, since this blog is under Edublogs, the theme cannot be edited.  Therefore the little feed icon cannot be added to a sidebar–since there isn’t a sidebar.  But, you can do one of two things to receive notification of new posts on the Dear Librarian:

First, you could look at your Internet tool bar up above.  You will probably see a little orange icon with a white radio wave like image inside.  Click on that, and you can add this blog to your feeds.  It looks like this:

Or second, you can go to your feed reader and copy this url address when you click on “add a feed” while on your reader.  Add this url: http://dearlibrarian.edublogs.org/

By doing either of those two things, you will receive notification when a Dear Librarian post has been added.  Feed away!

I can’t remember how to find the catalog on my computer. Can you remind me?

by Your Librarian

Of course!  Follow this pathway to access the print and AV resources found in our ASB Library:

1.  Go to “Start;”

2.  Now go to “Programs;”

3.  Then go to “All Application;”

4.  Look for “Spectrum Patrons’ Catalog” and click it open.  (The logo is a little red, purple, blue, and yellow circle with a white 5 in the middle.)

5.  You are now in the catalog and can browse the library’s inventory by keyword, author, title, or subject.  You can also conduct an expanded search and use more terms.

6.  Once you’ve found your resource, you can find it on the shelves and check it out!

You can ask me anything…!

by Your Librarian

Dear Students and Teachers,

This is the “Dear Librarian” Blog.  In the past, I’ve written you a newsletter once a month with anywhere from 3-6 questions.  Now, I can’t promise, but I will try to answer one question per day on this blog.

I invite you: please add comments!  I want to hear from you!!  I ask you of you. Please ask me questions.  I want to hear from you and answer your queries.  Here, I beg you.  Share with me about what you are reading.  We can run this blog together–you and me, Your Librarian!
